SUKA AGM – 22 January 2024 – A Review

Hello our dear SUKA family and friends,

We are very honoured and privileged here as your uncontested SUKA Executive Committee for the term 2024 to 2025.

This is my 11th year as a SUKA member with 2 of the previous years as the Vice President under Anu. I believe this has given me the skills and knowledge on how to lead the team for the current term. I’m excited to work with the new team, a number of them from the previous term who have gladly accepted to continue to serve our community together with me. This ensures a smooth transition and continuity.

Since SUKA was established in 1988, with around 60 – 70 members, it was initially formed so that Singaporeans, who have newly arrived in the UK, have a community to go to, to ask for advice regarding settling here in the UK. Now, we have more than 400 members from various nationalities and cultural backgrounds. As of today, about 40% of our memberships are non-Singaporeans. In line with Singapore Global Network’s motto, SUKA is continuing to fly the Singapore flag high in the UK, being international, outward looking and inclusive. We are proud ambassadors of Singapore! SUKA have also established ourselves and recognised by the Singapore High Commission and Singapore Global Network as the main Singaporean organisation with the capabilities of organising big events. This is evident in Singapore Global Networks’ faith in us with leading the organisation of Singapore Fiesta last year.

We have exciting plans in mind. Besides the usual CNY, Hari Raya, Singapore National Day, Deepavali and Christmas celebrations, the team would like to organise networking sessions, informal meals together, potential day trips from London, fundraising events and a karaoke/ disco event. Last but not least, we couldn’t have done these without our sponsors, partners and most of all the Singapore High Commission and Singapore Global Network. How lucky we are!

It will be a busy year. Watch this space!

My very best,
Helena
