National Day Celebrations – 7 August – A Review
Hello SUKA family and friends,
We would like to thank our 160 guests who celebrated Singapore’s 57th National Day with SUKA and participated enthusiastically in the activities including the raffle draw. The Singapore High Commissioner Mr Lim Thuan Kuan was well impressed with his first first face-to-face SUKA event which ‘looked like a wedding’ to him.
Many had also made an effort to dress in the Singapore theme, which had made selecting our best dressed winners a difficult task.
The celebrations started with opening speeches by our President Anu, followed by the Singapore High Commissioner Mr Lim Thuan Kuan and Singapore Global Network Regional Director (UK & Ireland) Baohui Huang. The event continued with our guests singing Majulah Singapura with gusto and reciting the National Pledge.
Our Secretary Cheryl presented about education in early Singapore where she delved into the history of some schools such as Hwa Chong and Anglo-Chinese School as well as the evolution of the language of instruction into English.
Rokshana (a virtuoso violinist who had also performed during our Diamond Jubilee celebrations) and Eugene, an extremely talented guitarist, entertained our guests with their rendition of a Singaporean classic Rasa Sayang.
Aparnaa, our gracious emcee, conducted a Singapore themed pub quiz which engaged all our guests and challenged their knowledge of Singapore history with buckets of laughter and fun.
The guests enjoyed a truly Singaporean meal with classic dishes such as chicken rice and laksa, for which we have the Copthorne Tara Hotel Kensington to thank for.
We are grateful for the continuous support from the Singapore Global Network, Saedah who had baked cupcakes for every guest as well as Miki who had set up a hat stall at the venue.
A huge thank you too to our sponsors for the goodie bags for all our guests and contributing to our raffle prizes:
